The first thing you need to know about My Social Security Account is that you don’t have to be receiving Social Security benefits to sign up for one. Those receiving benefits should definitely create an account and we have detailed instructions below on how to do that. However, there are several reasons why those not currently receiving social security benefits should also create an account – as explained in the video attached below.
How to Create a My Social Security Account
The only requirement to create and account is the following:
You must be able to verify some information about yourself and:
- Have a valid E-mail address,
- Have a Social Security number,
- Have a U.S. mailing address, and
- Be at least 18 years of age.
How to create your account:
Visit the Social Security Website and click on “Create An Account” as shown below:

In order for the Social Security Administration to verify that you are who you say you are, they will use the information you provided in step 2 to pull data from your credit report. You will then be asked questions from your credit report that only you would know. If you are not familiar with your credit report, you should pull your credit report and make sure you refresh your memory on what is in there. You can get a free credit report from CreditKarma.com or from annualcreditreport.com.
Once you answer all the questions asked correctly, you will be taken to step 4.
If you reached step 4, it means you have successfully completed the verification process and your “My Social Security Account” is created and you should receive a message like the one below:
You will be asked to accept terms and condition, after which you will be taken to your account. If you are successful, you will be taken to your account page. Here are some of the items on the menu that you will be able to view:
Here is a short video from the Social Security Administration on the account creation process we have walked through above and why it’s important that those who are not even receiving benefits should create an account.
